Yeager General Yeager was assigned to the 357th Fighter Group in which he flew combat missions over Europe from February of 1944 until the end of WWII. While in combat, Chuck downed thirteen enemy aircrafts including five ME-109's on a single day and one of Germany's first jet fighters. On October 14, 1947, General (then Captain) Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Chuck piloted the Bell X-1 to a speed of Mach 1.06, or 700mph.
